Mozart Don Giovanni Score
Despite a few drinks in his system, or perhaps because of them, Mozart managed to compose a masterful overture the night before "Don Giovanni's" premiere. As is often the case with Mozart, his ability to compose works of genius seems to defy the laws of human nature. The story goes like this: Mozart was out drinking with friends October 28th, 1787, the night before "Don Giovanni's" premiere, when one friend remarked that Mozart had not written the overture for his opera yet. At around midnight, Mozart went to his room and composed this work within about three hours that night, kept awake by his wife, Constanze, telling him stories of Aladdin's lamp, Cinderella and so on. On the night of the premiere, copyists had just finished making copies of this hastily written overture before the performance. The orchestra was assembled, the crowd was gathered, and just before the curtains went up the musicians were handed this wonder of a piece. Legend has it that the musicians sight-read the overture so well that the audience that night at the Estates Theatre in Prague applauded the work enthusiastically.

Mozart's opera is based on the Spanish legend of Don Juan, following the exploits of the seducer as he has sex with women of all stripes before leaving them. The opera premiered in Prague in October 1787 to rapturous applause. While much of Don Giovanni's bed-hopping is treated as farce (especially when he and his servant, Leporello, impersonate each other), the opera begins with him killing the father of one of his conquests and ends with the statue of that murdered man dragging Don Giovanni to hell. As a result, there has been much debate among musicians, scholars, directors, and opera lovers as to whether this opera is primarily a comedy or a tragedy.
But Mozart's chief occupation during 1787 was the composition of Don Giovanni, commissioned for production in Prague; it was given on October 29 and warmly received. Don Giovanni was Mozart's second opera based on a libretto by Da Ponte, who used as his model a libretto by Giovanni Bertati, set by Giuseppe Gazzaniga for Venice earlier in 1787. Da Ponte rewrote the libretto, inserting new episodes into the one-act original, which explains certain structural features. A difference in Mozart's approach to the work—a dramma giocoso in the tradition of Carlo Goldoni that, because of its more serious treatment of character, had a greater expressive potential than an opera buffa —is seen in the extended spans of the score, with set-piece numbers often running into one another. As in Figaro, the two act finales are again remarkable: the first for the three stage bands that play dances for different social segments—a suggested social compatibility that is shattered by the Don's attempted rape of the peasant Zerlina—the second for the supper scene in which the commendatore's statue consigns Giovanni to damnation, with trombones to suggest the supernatural and with hieratic dotted rhythms, extreme chromaticism, and wildly lurching harmony as Giovanni is overcome.

The opera did, however, enjoy outstanding popularity in Prague, and at the end of the year Mozart was invited to go to the Bohemian capital; he went in January 1787 and gave a new symphony there, the Prague (K 504), a demanding work that reflects his admiration for the capabilities of that city's musicians. After accepting a further operatic commission for Prague, he returned to Vienna in February 1787. In April he heard that his father was gravely ill. Mozart wrote him a letter of consolation putting forward a view of death ("this best and truest friend of mankind") based on the teachings of Freemasonry, which he had embraced at the end of 1784. Leopold died in May 1787. Mozart's music from this time includes the two string quintets K 515–516, arguably his supreme chamber works.
